Summer 2009

Anita Saunders

By Meghann Heft

For most people at the age of 64, college graduation seems like a thing of the past or an event reserved for their grandchildren. For Anita Saunders, though, her recent graduation from Sinclair was simply another step in her journey as a lifelong learner.

Saunders was ready for a career change and knew she wanted to go back to school to build upon her skills and learn a new trade. As part of the paralegal program at Sinclair, she enjoyed classes in bankruptcy law and litigation.

"For me, a lot of why I chose the paralegal program was simply human interest," she said. "I wanted to learn how the system works and how people go through all of that. Knowing the legal steps of what happens in the courtroom is so interesting, and most people only know courtrooms from what they see on television - which isn't how things really happen."

Due to the labor-intensive nature of the paralegal program and also working while she took classes, Saunders worked for nearly five-and-a-half years to complete her degree. Her dedicated professors helped her to improve her writing ability, as well as develop a clear, outlined thought process.

"I had such a positive experience at Sinclair," Saunders said. "I didn't have a single bad instructor while I was there, and I would recommend Sinclair to anyone who wants to further his or her education."
